Tim Etchells on visual art and theatre

I recently made a video with ArtReview's Oli Basciano talking to Tim Etchells, founder of the ground-breaking theatre company, Forced Entertainment. The interview is now online at ArtReview.com.

Tim is talking at his exhibition at Gasworks in Vauxhall, the centrepiece of which - Art Flavours - is a video that features an Italian ice cream maker attempting to cook up gelato based on four common words used to describe contemporary art. It's a piece that neatly encapsulates much of Tim's practice; setting up a problem and allowing the audience to watch as he, his company, or his subject, attempts to overcome it. Forced Entertainment were kind enough to supply me with excellent footage of their productions, so viewers of the video are treated to clips from 'Spectacular' and 'Quizoola!'.

The video is the second in a series on performance art. In the first, Tate curator Kathy Noble explains how big institutions are dealing with the medium, and how she was involved in commissioning Keren Cytter's first foray into theatrical work.
